Amazing, but true!

         Hillhouse’s Life Outside Lab

Many great synthetic chemists are also fine cooks. Prof. Hillhouse's culinary skills are legendary.  He was recently a  Chef-de-Jour at Charlie Trotter's  in Chicago, one of the country's finest "5-star" restaurants! ** SADLY, CLOSED AUGUST, 2012**

A perennial Intramural Basketball All-Star selection at the U of C during the 1990's,* Hillhouse is a feared natural scorer whose mantra is:  "The bank is open!" (*Prof. H's b-ball career with IM superpower Old World Fat was cut tragically short by a series of brutal knee and foot injuries.)

UPDATE!! (Summer, 2004) Prof. H briefly came out of retirement with Old World Fat veterans Surrey and Kwesi to squash some cocky graduate students and take their lunch money in a 3-on-3 challenge!

Shown here is Prof. H (in  Hawaiian shirt and straw hat) marching with the "World Famous Lawn Rangers" precision marching & drill team in the 2000 Broomcorn Festival Parade, held annually in lovely Arcola, ILQuite a weekend which everyone should experience at least once in  life!!

Hillhouse is also an accomplished artist.  The large oil painting shown above (a Paris park scene) hangs in his office for all to enjoy.

Hillhouse-led teams ("Group VI", "Beer", and the "Southside Hitmen") have historically dominated the PSD/BSD Summer Softball League (six-time champs from 1992-2000).  Above is a photo of members of the Southside Hitmen celebrating the 1995 title at Washington Park -- with magnums of Veuve Cliquot, of course!

In 2005, "Beer" returned to championship form, capturing yet another title in dominating fashion. They completed the “threepeat” with league titles in 2006 and 2007. After taking a break from the winner’s circle in 2008, Beer came back strong in 2009 finishing as league champs with a perfect 14-0 record.

Factoid: Prof. H's softball moniker is "The Hoover" because of his fielding prowess with a trusty Wilson A-2000 glove.

Professor of Chemistry… and more!
